At Wednesday's Sedgwick County Commission meeting, the board approved a zoning change that will affect some home daycares.

Currently, limited in-home daycares can have no more than 10 kids and in certain zoning areas only 1 employee. The county's change increases the limit to 12 kids and up to two employees.

The commission approved a memorandum of understanding with the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services for funding, acquisition and construction of a state psychiatric hospital within the county. The location and construction time table have yet to be determined.

The county will provide a tire recycling event next month. Businesses that collect fees for the disposal of tires will not be eligible to participate. The event will take place from April 20-22 and those who partake can drop off up to 50 tires.

Finally, the board appointed a new director of Public Works. Lynn Packer was formally nominated, after serving as interim director.

Commissioner Jim Howell said Packer has done an excellent job thus far, while Chairman Pete Meitzner praised his teamwork. Packer takes over for Jim Webber, who recently retired.
