The bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City has stepped aside while authorities investigate an allegation that he abused a minor. The diocese said in a statement Monday that Bishop John Brungardt denies the allegation and will cooperate with the investigation. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation notified the diocese about the accusation and is investigating. The diocese said no further information will be released. Brungardt was installed as bishop in the western Kansas diocese in February 2011. Before that, he served in the Wichita diocese for 12 years in several roles. Bishop Gerald Vinckle of the Salina Diocese will be administrator in Dodge City during the investigation.
