90 years ago: on October 13, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited Wichita on a Tuesday as part of his re-election campaign train-tour during the Kansas Diamond Jubilee celebration.
Roosevelt stayed at the Allis Hotel while in Wichita, where he dined on a steak.
The Wichita Eagle said there were 40,000 people in attendance for the stop by the Roosevelts; the Eagle reported his speech at Lawrence Stadium included the phrases "shoot a woodcock", and "whispering ghosts and stalking bogey-men."
Just three weeks later, FDR would carry the state in his bid for re-election to the White House, despite his opponent being Kansas governor Alf Landon.
