Wichita’s proposed 1% sales tax election is less than a month away; if it passes, Wichita Forward is looking to revitalize Century II and build a new performing arts center downtown.
The Wichita Forward plan calls for a quarter-billion dollars from the tax to revitalize Century II and improve the current convention center, along with up to $75 million for development and construction of a new public performing arts center.
Those opposed to the proposal say money should be spent on more pressing issues such as streets, the homeless, and upgrading police and fire infrastructure.
Susie Santo is the President and CEO of Visit Wichita. She says with potential money from the proposed sales tax, the Century II convention space could finally get upgraded to modern standards.
She estimates with the upgrades and additions, Wichita could bring in $32 million per year from added conventions.
February 10th is the final day to register to vote before the special election on March 3rd.
