A woman and her child were able to escape safely from a house fire. It happened early Tuesday in the 2900 block of west Newell, near Central, in west Wichita.
Crews found smoke and flames coming from a detached garage as they arrived. Those flames were spreading to the exterior of a neighboring home.
One firefighter was overcome by heat exhaustion, but was not hospitalized. A cause of the fire has not been released.
