Fires damage homes in Wichita and Butler County

House fires

Fireworks are to blame for a house fire in southwest Wichita.

It happened just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday night in the 2400 block of south Bonn, near Pawnee and Meridian.  Fire officials say someone put spent fireworks in a trashcan, and then placed the trashcan inside the garage.

The fireworks then caught the trashcan on fire, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage to the home.

A house cat perished in the fire, but there were no other injuries.

Crews also responded to an overnight fire in southeast Wichita.  It happened around 6:00 a.m. Monday morning in a duplex, in the 12,600 block of Willowgreen.

There were no injuries.  The fire caused an estimated $225,000 in damage.  A cause for that fire has not been determined.

In Butler County, fire crews were called to a house fire at around 10:45 p.m. Sunday night near Douglas.

Firefighters arrived to find a garage and part of a living room ablaze.  It took several hours for crews to bring the fire under control, as a water source was not available.

There were no injuries.  The cause remains under investigation.
