Fireworks are to blame for a house fire in southwest Wichita.
It happened just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday night in the 2400 block of south Bonn, near Pawnee and Meridian. Fire officials say someone put spent fireworks in a trashcan, and then placed the trashcan inside the garage.
The fireworks then caught the trashcan on fire, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage to the home.
A house cat perished in the fire, but there were no other injuries.
Crews also responded to an overnight fire in southeast Wichita. It happened around 6:00 a.m. Monday morning in a duplex, in the 12,600 block of Willowgreen.
There were no injuries. The fire caused an estimated $225,000 in damage. A cause for that fire has not been determined.
In Butler County, fire crews were called to a house fire at around 10:45 p.m. Sunday night near Douglas.
Firefighters arrived to find a garage and part of a living room ablaze. It took several hours for crews to bring the fire under control, as a water source was not available.
There were no injuries. The cause remains under investigation.
