Multiple counties in Kansas are cleaning up after severe weather struck again this past weekend. Across the city of Harper, southwest of Wichita, there's storm damage everywhere -- tree branches, broken windows, and flooding occurred across the city; residents were busy cleaning them up on Monday.
The city of Harper said Public Works will be picking up tree limbs on Thursday, June 25, with residents needing to have them ready for pickup at the curb; once a home has been passed, Public Works will not come back again.
Additionally, the burn pile in Harper is available for those who are able to haul their own limbs.
In Reno County, flooding on the Cow Creek is anticipated throughout the week in the Hutchinson area, forcing multiple road closures.
Cowley & Sumner counties in south-central Kansas saw major flooding during the holiday weekend and into Monday, with water in homes, across flooded roads, and filling up facilities like the Cowley County Humane Society.
The Kansas Turnpike and US-81 Highway closed, then reopened Monday morning.
The Cowley County Humane Society in Winfield had serious flooding on Sunday morning.
With an urgent need to get animals (mostly dogs) out of the flooded building, fosters came to pick them up -- all the animals survived.
In one room, dogs were backed into corners while beds and toys floated by. In another room, dogs were in kennels, standing in water up to their necks.
The Cowley County Humane Society now needs donations -- dog beds, clean-up items, fans, blankets, towels, and money.
On the west side of Wellington, fire personnel say a woman was driving along S. Oliver, she drove around a road barricade with a sign saying "bridge out," and less than a mile down the road she needing to be rescued.
She drove around the barricade and into floodwaters, which quickly lifted the vehicle, sweeping it away into a farm field. The Wellington Fire/Emergency Medical Services Department responded with a rescue boat.
After crawling out onto the hood of the vehicle, she was pulled to safety aboard the boat.
