The Wichita City Council has approved a supplemental agreement that will cover the cost of design, potential right-of-way acquisition and management of a flood mitigation project on Bleckley Drive.
The roadway, located roughly two blocks east of Oliver in east Wichita, has experienced flooding for many years.
Gary Jansen with Wichita Public works says the construction of a large, underground storm water structure will cost $36.125 million, all of which will be paid for from the city's stormwater utility fund.
Phase 1 of the project between Kellogg and Waterman would start in 2025. Phase 2 from Waterman to Elm, just north of Central, would be completed by 2028.
Jansen says the underground culvert would be roughly 10 feet by 6 feet in size near Elm, expanding to 16 feet by 9 feet just north of Kellogg.
