This week a civilian supervisor at the Wichita Animal Shelter allowed animals to be euthanized prior to obtaining required approvals.

Wichita Police called it a regrettable incident and said an investigation is underway by the city’s Professional Standards Bureau.

Chief Joe Sullivan revealed the involved employee has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation. If WPD policies, procedures or expectations were not followed, Sullivan said appropriate personnel action will be taken.

The Department apologized for the incident and said an adjustment to operations has been made to avoid this issue from reoccurring. Wichita Police say they remain committed to the goal of providing humane care and maximizing the number of animals saved.
