Sedgwick County commissioners voted to terminate automatic and mutual fire aid agreements with five communities, a move county leaders say is aimed at updating decades-old arrangements and addressing financial concerns.

The agreements involve the cities of Cheney, Clearwater, Colwich, Mount Hope, and Valley Center. County fire officials said some of the partnerships have been in place for nearly 30 years and no longer reflect current staffing, equipment, and response costs.

Sedgwick County Fire Chief Doug Williams said the county plans to renegotiate the agreements with each city individually. Officials emphasized that the decision does not immediately stop fire response assistance but instead begins a 90-day process to work on updated terms.

County leaders described the issue as a financial and operational decision, saying taxpayers in unincorporated Sedgwick County have been covering a significant share of emergency response costs for neighboring communities. Some commissioners also expressed concerns about outdated language in the current agreements.

Communities affected by the decision are now evaluating next steps as negotiations move forward. Local officials said they still expect cooperation between departments during emergencies while new agreements are discussed.
