Kansas residents are being asked to conserve energy as utility companies began imposing rolling blackouts in response to exploding frigid temperatures and wind chills across the state.

The blackouts lasted 60 to 90 minutes Monday in some areas. Andrew French, head of the Kansas Corporation Commission, said the commission says further blackouts could be necessary in the face of unprecedented demand as the extreme weather continues into Tuesday.

French and Gov. Laura Kelly urged residents to do what they can to conserve energy to help the supply and reduce energy bills in the future.
