The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred during a hostage situation, which began Friday night in Atchison.

At around 5:45 p.m., Atchison Police responded to calls about a person with a gun and breaking into an apartment. An arriving officer exited his vehicle and multiple shots were fired at him, striking his police vehicle. The officer was not injured. The man, identified as Bryson McCray, 36, of St. Joseph, Mo., then fled back into a residence. Additional officers from the Atchison PD were called to the scene.

Officers learned that a woman known to McCray was being held inside of the residence. Law enforcement attempted to peacefully negotiate throughout the night with McCray, asking for the woman's release. The subject did not cooperate and continued to fire his weapon at law enforcement.

Around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, during an attempt to rescue the woman, McCray and the hostage were separated momentarily, and a KHP trooper shot McCray. Life-saving measures were made on the suspect at the scene and at an area hospital. McCray was later transported to a Kansas City hospital and remains in critical condition. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The independent investigation will determine all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. When this investigation concludes, the findings will be presented to the Atchison County Attorney.
