The KBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday morning in Haskell County.

At approximately 1:50 a.m., a Haskell County deputy attempted to make a traffic stop at the intersection of U.S. 83 and U.S. 56 in Sublette. The suspect, Richard Castillo, 37 of Ulysses, failed to stop and a pursuit continued to K-144. The suspect attempted to make a U-turn, striking the deputy’s vehicle and coming to a stop in the ditch.

The two deputies on scene gave Castillo verbal commands. When he produced a firearm from within the vehicle, both deputies fired their weapons, striking Castillo. He died at the scene and an autopsy will be performed.

The involved deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave. Once the investigation has concluded, the findings will be turned over to the Haskell County Attorney for review.
