The KBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday night in Kansas City, Kansas.

Around 7:35 p.m., officers from KCKPD were dispatched to Kansas City home after a caller reported a family member was behaving erratically in his vehicle in her driveway.

Fifteen minutes later, two officers arrived and approached the SUV. One of the officers noticed the man, Jesse James West, 36, of Kansas City, Kansas, had a firearm. Officers retreated and gave West several commands to exit the vehicle with his hands up. As officers again approached the SUV and repeated their commands, one of the officers fired one round striking West. Despite life-saving measures, he later died at a local hospital. No officers were injured. After the shooting, rifle components were found at the scene.

The independent investigation will look at all events leading up to the shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI will release details to the public as soon as possible.

The final report will take several weeks to complete, then will be presented to the Wyandotte County District Attorney for review.
