Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter said a man wanted in a domestic violence case from Tuesday night was taken to a Wichita hospital in potentially critical condition after he was shot by an officer early Wednesday morning on the north side of Park City.
The scene was on the property of an RV dealership at the southwest corner of 85th Street North & Interstate-135. Sheriff Easter said the man, who tried to flee and hide from officers, was shot in the upper arm.
Easter said this all began a little after 2:30 a.m. with a call from a woman in Valley Center who reported she believed that her son was wanted, and that he was at her house.
When Valley Center police responded to that call, Sheriff Easter said the man’s truck was gone. A Park City police officer then spotted that truck at a convenience store off of 77th Street North between Broadway and I-135. An attempt to stop the truck led to a short chase, and the man crashed into a fence at the Blue Compass RV dealership near 85th and I-135 before running off.
Sheriff Easter said the fence closed behind the man after he crashed his truck into it, and pursuing officers couldn’t get through.
Officers established a perimeter and searched for the man on the business’s property for more than two hours. At about 5:17 a.m., they found him hiding behind a trailer.
The officers reported the man had a gun in his hand, and deputies said shots were fired before the man ran off again.
At about 5:30 a.m., officers located the man hiding behind a trailer, and more shots were fired before the suspect was taken into custody.
Easter said that the shooting involved an officer from the Park City Police, an officer from Maize police, and a sheriff’s deputy.
The Wichita Police Department is handling the investigation into this officer-involved shooting.
The suspect was wanted for crimes including aggravated battery, criminal threat, and criminal damage to property.
