The Kansas Department of Transportation has updated their schedule to begin long-term lane reductions on I-135 and U.S. 54 in Wichita. The lanes reductions will begin on Monday, Dec. 1. The ramp from northbound I-135 to westbound U.S. 54 will now close beginning Monday, Jan. 5, 2026.

On I-135, the two inside lanes will be closed in both directions as work takes place between Lincoln Street and Douglas Avenue at the I-135 and U.S. 54/Kellogg interchange. On U.S. 54, the two inside lanes will be closed in both directions from Hillside to Topeka.

The project includes bridge construction at the interchange, including bridge replacement and deck rehabilitation. The inside lanes will be used for initial construction phases for the new bridge and removal of the existing bridge. Work on the project is anticipated to continue until September 2027, conditions permitting.

During the ramp closure, northbound I-135 motorists should continue past the interchange, take the 2nd Street exit, enter southbound I-135 and use the westbound U.S. 54 exit as a detour. Motorists should allow extra travel time and use caution while traveling through the area. The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 50 mph.
