The Wichita Public Library will spend just over $400 thousand to add RFID tags to its entire catalog and upgrade and purchase equipment for the conversion.

The project will add the tags to over 1 million items the library system owns. While the costs of RFID tags versus bar code tags will be higher, Wichita Public Library Director Jaime Nix says it will pay off down the road, saving over $153 thousand in staff time annually, thus paying for itself within 3 years.

The funding will also purchase three additional self-check units, at a cost of $37 thousand.
