Multiple breaks in the water mains has resulted in a boil water advisory for residents of Lyons. Crews have been working to repair nearly a dozen breaks.
Officials believe there was a sudden pressure surge that caused the breaks, as maintenance was being done on one of the town's two water towers.
The Rice County Emergency manager said they have implemented their emergency disaster plan and have asked for assistance from the state.
The advisory took effect on Thursday and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued the advisory because of a loss of pressure in the distribution system.
