Marking 100 years since Wichitans first saw something new in the sky

100 years ago on this day, Wichitans looked up into the sky and saw something they'd never seen before.

Sky-writing was demonstrated for the first time in Wichita by Captain Derek Shepperson, a former British ace; he was working for the Sky-Writing Corporation of America.

He spelled out the words “Lucky Strike” for the American Tobacco Company.
