The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says the number of measles cases confirmed in the state jumped from 10 to 23.
Twenty-one of those cases involve children under the age of 17. Twenty of the people affected were not vaccinated. Adrienne Byrne, Director of the Sedgwick County Health Department, says the measles vaccine has been around for over 60 years and is safe and effective.
Six counties in southwest Kansas are affected, including Grant, Gray, Haskell, Kiowa, Morton and Stevens.
So far, Sedgwick County has not reported any cases.
