Short term rental properties, like Airbnb, must now be licensed with the city of Wichita at a cost of $225 per year per property.

The Wichita City Council established several new regulations on these properties, including occupancy and gathering limits and the requirement of liability insurance.

City Manager Robert Layton said industry leaders are on board with what the city has proposed.

If a property has 2 violations in a 12-month period, their license will be revoked.

The ordinance was in response to a shooting in April 2021 at a short-term rental property in the Crown Heights neighborhood.

The council also passed short-term rental zoning code changes to make it legal for rental stays of less than 28 days. A proposed ordinance pertaining to nuisance parties was deferred until December 12.
