The Wichita City Council passed a new ordinance to help address violent crime occurrences at night clubs.

The Chief of Police can now immediately suspend a license for up to 10 days if there is a major violent event or credible threat of violence. The new ordinance would also create an avenue for a quick appeal if an emergency suspension is ordered and would require a meeting between the licensee and WPD.

Previous city ordinances didn't allow Police to shut down clubs due to threats and didn't require a safety plan to be in place, unless the established venue was located in Wichita's Old Town area.

Nine people were shot and two trampled at the former City Nightz club on July 2. The venue has since closed.
