The last Kansas county to require masks for its residents to slow the spread of COVID-19 has allowed the mandate to expire.

Wyandotte County's Board of Commissioners let the health order to expire at 12 a.m. Friday. Seven out of nine commissioners voted against extending the order for an additional 30 days.

The decision was made following consultation with local health officials. The commission and local health officials still recommend wearing masks indoors.

Currently, about 27% of Wyandotte County residents are fully vaccinated, while just over 30% of residents have received one shot. According to statistics from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, 41% of Kansans have been vaccinated with one dose.
