A standoff in Russell has ended after a suspect refused to surrender for nearly eight hours. It began around 10:00 a.m. Monday when officers went to a residence in the 300 block of W. 16, to serve a felony arrest warrant.

A woman in the home advised the two officers that the man they were looking for was inside, and was armed. They were able to remove a gun and a bag of ammo from just inside the front door, before ordering the suspect to surrender.
The man refused. Both officers and the woman then exited the residence, and additional officers were called to assist. Due to the suspects history, and a believe the man had a second weapon in the house, the Kansas Highway Patrol’s Special Response Team was also requested, along with the KBI’s High-Risk Warrant Team.
After several hours of negotiations, the subject exited the residence and was taken into custody at 6:10 p.m. without further incident.
