President Donald Trump commented on the vandalism that left Wichita’s St. Patrick Catholic Church damaged last weekend.
On Saturday, Wichita police responded to the church at 2007 N. Arkansas. Officers found significant damage, including hate-speech graffiti, destroyed religious items, and a burned U.S. flag. The Kansas Catholic Conference said a satanic website was scrawled on the wall.
Officers arrested a 23-year-old Salina man the following day; he's not been officially charged in the incident. He was booked on suspicion of burglary, criminal desecration, and criminal damage to property. Parishoners had to celebrate Sunday mass in the school gymnasium because of the damage inside the church.
Trump told reporters on Monday his administration will review the situation and called it a “terrible thing.”
“Well, we’re going to take a look. I love Wichita. You know, I got big votes there. We won that state by a lot,” he said.
The FBI is assisting in the investigation.
This week marks the 75th anniversary of the dedication of St. Patrick's church.
