The plan provides tools and technical assistance to develop cross-system, data-driven strategies aimed at reducing the number of people with mental health and other disorders from sitting in jails.

Chairman David Dennis says mental illness has wide-reaching effects on the community, impacting the jail, the District Attorney’s office and the court system.

The initiative was launched nearly seven years ago by the National Association of Counties, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Council of State Governments Justice Center. Five-hundred counties around the nation are already engaged in this initiative.
