
A Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office K-9 was killed pursuing a robbery suspect.
It began around noon Thursday in the area of Pawnee and Rock as Wichita officers were attempting to locate a man, 24, suspected of robbery.
The suspect was located, but he fled on foot, through a creek, and barricaded himself in a drain and under the road. Officials said that
K-9 officers were sent in on extended leashes equipped with cameras.
Just after 1:30 p.m. there was an altercation with the suspect and a Sedgwick County Sheriff K-9. The dog was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers were able to negotiate with the suspect, who finally surrendered just after 2:30 p.m. and was taken into custody.
He was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries before being booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.
Authorities believe the suspect strangled the K-9, Bane to death. But, a necropsy will be performed. Charges for the suspect are pending.
According to Kansas law, the killing of police K-9 is a felony. If convicted a person faces up to a year in prison.
