On Tuesday, the National Weather Service Wichita issued a Fire Weather Watch for Thursday morning and afternoon due to the potential for extreme grassland fire danger across parts of Kansas, including Sedgwick County. Sustained winds above 30 mph with gusts around 50 mph are in Wichita's forecast, prompting the watch. And similar conditions are possible for the next couple of weeks.

The NWS says that in a Fire Weather Watch the public is asked to remain vigilant against creating a situation that could spark a wildfire.  Some examples include extinguishing all outdoor fires properly. Drown fires with plenty of water and stir to make sure everything is cold to the touch. Dunk charcoal in water until cold. Do not throw live charcoal on the ground and leave it. Also they say to never leave a fire unattended. Sparks or embers can blow into leaves or grass, ignite a fire, and quickly spread.
