Overnight snow leaves Kansas roads snow-packed, and schools closed

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories remained in effect through the night, and this morning the snowfall has moved out of central Kansas. Snow depths of five inches or more in the Wichita area are common, with an official 5-point-4 inches at Eisenhower Airport. Wichita streets are snow packed, KDOT lists Wichita area highways as partially snow packed. Many schools across Kansas are closed again today, including Wichita Public and Catholic schools.

The City of Wichita announced that Cowtown, Botanica, the Mid-America All-Indian Museum, O.J. Watson Park, and the Great Plains Nature Center are closed Wednesday February 19th. As well as the Atwater, Evergreen, and Colvin Neighborhood Resource Centers and all Wichita Public Golf Courses.


Wichita State University as announced that their campus will return to normal operations Wednesday. In-person classes will be in session; however, instructors do have the discretion to hold their classes remotely or to cancel. In the release, WSU says Facilities Services personnel are working hard to clear roadways and sidewalks on campus, but they advise caution and allowing for extra travel time when driving and walking on snow.

The City of Wichita Public Works crews continue working around-the-clock to treat streets. As a reminder, the effectiveness of brine and salt/sand diminishes the lower the temperature gets, and snow-packed conditions will continue to make roads difficult to travel.
