A seven-hour standoff with a suicidal man in west Wichita came to a peaceful ending.
Police were called to the home near 9th and High Street at around noon Wednesday. Officers responded to a welfare check regarding a man, 39, having a possible mental health crisis.
When the man presented a handgun the officers backed away and called for additional assistance. SWAT negotiators and a mental health team were sent to take over the negotiations.
A nearby elementary school was placed on lockdown. Neighbors were also alerted of the situation a were asked to voluntarily leave or shelter in place.
Officials say the man became adjugated by the number of police surrounding his home. So, a decision was made to pull some of them back.
By reducing the number of officers, officials said it helped to defuse a tense situation. The man eventually surrendered to officers without incident.
