It was 40 years ago on this day (1986): the E. Wichita clinic of late-term abortion provider, Dr. George Tiller, was heavily damaged by a pipe bomb; the explosive device was placed by a suspect (or suspects) who remain anonymous.
The blast east of Kellogg & Oliver caused damages both outside and inside the Women's Health Care Services clinic, in excess of $100,000, blowing a six-foot-wide hole in the building. In a defiant display just a few days later, Dr. Tiller put up a sign in front of the rubble reading, "Hell, No. We Won't Go!"
It took three months to repair the clinic before re-opening its doors.
The bombing was the first major violent attack on Dr. Tiller's practice, and he afterwards heavily fortified the building and began advertising nationally.
