The City of Wichita is set to begin a major infrastructure improvement project around the Keeper of the Plains parking lot at Central and Nims on Monday, July 13.
The work is expected to continue through the winter of 2026 and is aimed at improving the long-term stability and accessibility of the popular riverfront site.
Planned improvements include the construction of a retaining wall, upgrades to the area's drainage and irrigation systems, pedestrian accessibility enhancements, and the planting of new trees. City officials said the project will also help address ongoing erosion concerns near the Keeper of the Plains.
Visitors should expect temporary changes during construction. A temporary asphalt walkway will be installed to maintain access between the parking lot, the Arkansas River, and the Keeper of the Plains. Portions of the riverside trail will be closed periodically as work progresses.
Sections of the parking lot may also be occupied by construction vehicles and equipment during daytime hours. However, the parking lot itself is not part of the project and is not scheduled to receive major improvements.
The City is asking visitors to use caution in the area, follow posted construction signs, and be patient while the improvements are completed.
