A stretch of dangerous summer heat is expected to settle over Kansas this weekend, prompting Storm Team 12 to issue Weather Alert Days from Saturday through Monday.
Thursday and Friday will bring relatively comfortable conditions, with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s. An isolated shower or thunderstorm is possible Thursday, mainly across southern Kansas, but widespread severe weather is not expected.
The biggest concern arrives this weekend as temperatures climb into the upper 90s, with some communities topping 100 degrees. Combined with humidity, heat index values are expected to reach around 105 degrees Sunday and Monday, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Health officials recommend staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wearing lightweight clothing, and checking on older adults, young children, and anyone without access to air conditioning. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, where temperatures can rise rapidly.
Forecasters say the hot, dry pattern is expected to continue into early next week before any significant relief arrives.
