Students in Wichita Public Schools will face new restrictions on cellphone use when classes begin this fall after the USD 259 Board of Education approved a policy aligning with a new Kansas law requiring districts to limit personal electronic devices during the school day.
The policy prohibits students from using cellphones and other personal electronic communication devices throughout the school day, including during class, passing periods and lunch. The rule is intended to reduce distractions, improve classroom focus and encourage more face-to-face interaction among students.
Students with medical needs, accommodations through an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 plan, or those facing emergencies will be exempt from the ban. Teachers may also authorize device use for instructional purposes when appropriate.
District leaders say individual schools will communicate how the policy will be enforced, including where students should store their devices during the school day and the consequences for violating the rules.
The policy takes effect for the start of the 2026-27 school year as districts across Kansas implement the statewide cellphone restrictions approved by lawmakers earlier this year.
