Wichita Police will have a new records system in the coming years. The Wichita City Council approved a contract with Axon at Tuesday's meeting. WPD currently uses Axon's body cameras for officers. Wichita Police requested the new records system after struggling with the current system they began using in April 2021.
The contract with Axon is just shy of $6 million, with other costs totaling $479 thousand. However the net cost to the city is projected in the $1.3 to $1.5 million range after savings are realized. Police say the transition will take 1-2 years, and the Axon records system will go live in the first quarter of 2027.
