The Wichita City Council formally approved the city's 2022 budget and capital improvement plan.
The budget stands at just over $670 million dollars, supported by a mill levy of 32.749 mills.
Some of the highlights for the fire department include funding for the response optimization initiative. It would retain 12 grant-funded firefighters and would replace six fire stations. Police funding would include four new patrol stations and seven additional officer positions.
The budget would also fund improvements to the West Street Corridor and to the North Junction, along with increasing street maintenance to $163 million through 2031.
Council member Bryan Frye said the budget and CIP has a chance to be transformational.
The council also got an overview on the city's 2021 firework enforcement efforts. The city received 1,139 complaint calls between July 1 and July 5. With 88 citations issued, the fines will exceed $28 thousand.
