Wichita City Council approves anti-discrimination ordinance

The Wichita City Council on Tuesday narrowly approved an anti-discrimination ordinance.

The motion passed 4-3, with council members Jeff Blubaugh, Bryan Frye and Jared Cerullo voting no. While all members supported the idea of an ordinance, several were concerned about transparency and the vetting process with this proposal, with portions of it finished this past weekend and presented to the council on Monday, the day before the meeting.

Council member Cerullo said that "as a proud, gay man" he was offended that no one asked what he thought about the ordinance and called it "rushed and unprepared."

Council member Becky Tuttle said the process was not transparent and hoped that it does not happen again.

While Tuesday was the first reading of the ordinance, the second reading will be on July 6. It will be listed in the city's agenda as "unfinished business" and it is possible council members could suggest changes at that time.
