Wichita City Council discusses illegal camping, homelessness

At Tuesday's Wichita City Council workshop, the council discussed proposed amendments to ordinances that address illegal camping.

So far in 2024, the city has cleaned up over 1700 illegal camp sites, at a cost of over $165 thousand.

The city wants to change how quickly they can clean up the camp sites, especially in public areas. Other changes would address enforcement and pedestrian safety.

Council member J.V. Johnston says even with the new Emergency winter shelter opening next month, it won't completely address homelessness. Providing affordable housing, he says, is key to solving that issue.

The final proposals will officially come before the council on December 17.
