On Tuesday, Wichita set a new record for a low temperature on January 21st, when the mercury plummeted to -9 degrees at 8:04 a.m.
That broke the old record for the date of -7 degrees, set 90 years ago, back in 1935.
So far, this is Wichita's coldest January in 46 years (1979) -- about 10 degrees below average -- but it's still not among the city's 10 coldest Januarys on record.
Wichita has also recorded more than 10-and-a-half inches of snow so far this month, giving the city its snowiest January in 38 years (since 1987), and this is now among Wichita's Top 10 most snow-filled Januarys since official records began in the late 1880s.
Many area school districts in south-central Kansas canceled classes for the day on Wednesday.
