A jail inmate in Wichita will spend more than five years in prison for throwing boiling water on a Sedgwick County detention deputy.
James Chavez was sentenced after pleading guilty to aggravated battery last month.
Back in April, Chavez threw boiling water on a detention deputy at the Sedgwick County Jail, leaving the deputy with second- and third-degree burns.
The incident happened on April 14 while the deputy was speaking with inmates in a housing pod. The sheriff’s office said Chavez obtained a pot of boiling water and threw it on the deputy, causing burns to the back of his body.
Chavez, 20 years old at the time of the incident, was originally booked into the jail in March 2024 on pending juvenile charges, and later faced an additional charge for trafficking contraband into a correctional facility.
Records show he's had approximately 40 disciplinary incidents since entering the facility.
