Wichita residents were recently asked to provide feedback on the city's proposed 2024 budget. Fifty-one percent of respondents said their number one concern was crime.
To address that issue, Police Chief Joseph Sullivan was asked how the department was actively tackling vacancies. The Chief said there's a new Captain in the training bureau and a new recruitment Sargent. He also admitted the recruitment process took too long.
Chief Sullivan also added that while the department is stepping up recruitment efforts, they won't lower their standards.
The proposed 2024 budget will be presented at the next city council meeting on July 11.
