Kansas State Representative Gail Finney, who represented District 84 of Wichita in the Statehouse for 13 years, has passed away at the age of 63.
Several legislators from both parties expressed their sadness at hearing the news and offered condolences to her family.
In a Facebook statement Saturday morning, the Sedgwick County Democratic Party said "she worked hard every day for her community. Our hearts cry out as we remember her life and legacy."
In another Facebook post, Republican Representative Stephen Owens said, "She was an absolute sweetheart, full of kindness and compassion. I will miss her beautiful smile in Topeka."
Governor Laura Kelly directed flags to be lowered to half-staff on all state buildings, grounds, and facilities effective immediately for Representative Finney.
