Wichita to lower river for maintenance and cleanup

Beginning on Friday, November 24, City staff will begin lowering the level of the Arkansas River for one week before raising it back on Friday, December 1.

The river level will be lowered to approximately two feet deep, which will greatly reduce water flow down the fish ladder/boat pass. At the request of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the City will be making some minor modifications to the fish ladder/boat pass in order to reduce long term sediment build-up.

The City's combination fish ladder/boat pass was constructed during a 2011/2012 reconstruction of the Lincoln Street Dam. The innovative fish ladder/boat pass design supports recreation on the Big Arkansas River, while allowing endangered and at-risk fish life to bypass and populate habitats where their numbers had previously reduced over time.

While the river is lowered, there will be a river cleanup to retrieve scooters in the big Arkansas River.
