Tattoo and body piercing businesses will now be permitted in Wichita's Old Town.
When the Old Town district was established in 1991, those businesses were not allowed as to preserve the area's special historic and architectural character. The limits were also aimed to protect private property values and public investments in and near the area.
Late last year, a tattoo parlor opened in Old Town and soon received a violation notice. That's when the discussion started regarding the zoning issue.
Scott Wadle from the planning department said tattoo and body piercing facilities must follow conditions, which includes work by appointment only and hours of operation limited to between 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The Wichita City Council approved the zoning change by a 7-0 vote.
