A six-year-old girl has died from injuries she sustained Sunday on a Colorado amusement park ride called the Haunted Mine Drop.
According to a press release from Garfield County, Colo. Coroner Robert M. Glassmire, employees at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park initiated first aid immediately after the girl was injured and continued until paramedics arrived at the Glenwood Springs, Colo., park. The Garfield County Coroner’s Office was dispatched to the scene at 7:44 p.m.
On police scanner traffic, a dispatcher can be heard requesting “EMS at Glenwood Caverns for a party that fell out of the shaft ride,” reported CBS 4 Denver. “The party is at the bottom of the shaft,” the dispatcher reportedly continued.
A Glenwood Caverns press release from 2017 described the Haunted Mine drop as attraction that “drops riders 110 feet down inside the mountain as they listen to ghostly mining tales from days gone by.”
Glenwood Caverns also described the ride as the world’s first underground drop ride. It was named one of USA Today’s most anticipated rides in 2017 and was voted the top new amusement park attraction the following year, said the park. Haunted Mine Drop has a height minimum of 46 inches, according to CNN.
Glenwood Springs Fire Department personnel ultimately determined the child had perished on the ride. Circumstances of the fatality are under investigation by the sheriff’s office and coroner’s office, said Glassmire. An autopsy is also scheduled with the coroner’s office forensic pathologist for this week, he said.
His office identified the victim as a six-year-old female from Colorado Springs, Colo., around a three-and-a-half-hour drive from Glenwood Springs. Glassmire said the child was vacationing in the town with her family when the tragic incident occurred.
As of Monday, the identity of the child is being withheld to give her family time to notify additional family members, he said.
“The Coroner’s Office extends their condolences to the friends and family of the victim,” said Glassmire.
“We are deeply saddened and ask that you please keep the family of the deceased in your thoughts and prayers,” said a notice on the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park website Tuesday. “Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park will be closed Monday, September 6 and Tuesday, September 7.”
