A new feature rolled out for McDonald’s customers in Australia has left at least one a bit uncomfortable after she saw her name suddenly appear on an order board.
In a March 27 TikTok video, an Australian influencer Jasmine Hand showed how her name, “Jaz” showed up on the digital drive-through order board at McDonald’s when she visited the fast food restaurant.
“Can someone tell me when this became a thing at Macca’s?” she asked, using the Australian nickname for McDonald’s. “Because, I feel like I’ve been exposed.”
As of Wednesday, the video had more than 40,000 likes.
Apparently, the name callout is a feature of the MyMacca’s app, a version of the McDonald’s app in Australia. According to the Daily Mail, the feature was introduced in December and it has “confused” and “freaked out” some customers.
“The MyMacca’s app provides great convenience and value for our customers, with a personalized touch,” a McDonald's spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia, according to that outlet. “This feature has been available since December on orders made via the MyMacca’s app.”
Yahoo News Australia also noted that customers seemed upset about the feature, including one who said they “nearly died” when they saw their name. Those who are uncomfortable seeing their name can opt out, the company explained.
“We know not all customers will appreciate the personalized greeting so we’ve made it a feature that MyMacca’s customers can opt out of by going to their settings in the app,” a spokesperson for McDonald’s told Australian news outlet news.com.au.
One McDonald’s worker cited by the New York Post said that employees have long been able to see the names and were told to greet customers by name. However, they often did not because they were concerned that is was weird, said that employee.
