The United States House of Representatives has officially voted to launch a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
The vote came the same day as House Republicans prepared to meet with the president’s son, Hunter Biden, who was subpoenaed to appear for a closed-door deposition.
However, Biden didn't appear for the deposition, resulting in lawmakers launching contempt proceedings against him.
In months prior, the entirety of the GOP conference was not fully onboard with formalizing an impeachment inquiry into the president.
However, ahead of the vote, Speaker Mike Johnson felt he had the necessary number to pass the formalization.
Other top Republicans in the House also shared their thoughts on the inquiry ahead of the vote, including Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer.
“The American people gave our House Republican Majority a mandate to provide transparency and accountability,” Emmer said in a post on X. “We are living up to that mandate today.”
Through the formalization of the impeachment inquiry, House Republicans are hoping to gain more access to records they hadn’t before as they look to find wrongdoing on the president’s behalf.
This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
