A 74-year-old homeowner was killed in his driveway in Whittier on Saturday night after neighbors say he got into a confrontation with the attacker who struck him with a bat.
The incident occurred at 8:45 p.m. Saturday when the victim, David Lee Stanley, was hit in the head with a baseball bat, according to his neighbor Ramon Guitierrez, CBS News reported.
Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call of an assault with a deadly weapon. When they arrived, they found the victim suffering from an apparent head injury.
"It was reported that the victim was arguing with a neighbor prior to the disturbance on the porch," authorities said in a news release.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and pronounced the man dead. His son, Jeffery Stanley, has spoken out on the attack, saying it was one of his neighbors who carried it out.
"He argued with my dad. My dad told him to leave the house and get off the property and he didn't,” Jeffrey Stanley said to CBS News. “I told him 'Go in the house and leave it alone.'"
But, detectives say it was Jeffery Stanley who started the argument with the neighbor, and his father only stepped in when things escalated. The son has stood by his story, saying his father stood up to the neighbor.
Other neighbors have shared with the media outlet that the man’s son has had issues with others in the past.
No arrests have been made in connection to the man's death, but the sheriff’s department has been interviewing the neighbor.
The investigation into his death and what caused the altercation remains ongoing.
