CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It's day one of the Democratic National Convention, and it's the first time the DNC has been in Chicago since 1996.
Sunday night, on the eve of the DNC, the first of two permitted demonstrations took place in the Loop.
A coalition of feminist and LGBTQ+ organizations called Bodies Outside of Unjust Laws marched for over three hours. Hundreds of people protested, demanding action on reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights and an end to the Israel-Hamas War.
That protest did stay peaceful, no arrests were reported.
Today, a permitted demonstration will be happening at Union Park near the United Center. The Coalition to March on the DNC will be focusing on the Pro-Palestinian cause.
Chicago officials have said they're confident the city will not see a repeat of 1968's DNC violent protests or 2012's demonstrations during the Chicago NATO Summit.
Inside the United Center today, President Biden is set to speak along with First Lady Jill Biden. Today's theme will be "For the People."
Mayor Johnson will also address the convention. Throughout the week, we'll also hear from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Former President Barack Obama, and former First Lady Michelle Obama among others.
