DETROIT (WWJ) -- Uber is trying to make the ride-share experience better for women.
Starting next week, in three U.S. cities — including here in Detroit — women calling for an Uber ride will have the chance to match with women drivers by changing their in-app preference. Women driving for Uber will also be able to choose a setting indicating a preference for female riders.
There's no guarantee you'll be matched with a woman, but your chances increase when you make the selection.
“It’s about giving women more choice, more control, and more comfort when they ride and drive,” said Camiel Irving, Uber’s vice president of U.S. and Canada operations, in a release.
In Detroit on Wednesday, WWJ Newsradio 950's Luke Sloan spoke with several female riders who think the new feature is a good idea.
This includes Carmen Lamb of Detroit, who said it would be nice to have that option.
She has had issues with drivers in the past.
"I have, actually, you know, male and female," Lamb said. "It hasn't been anything crazy, you know, but I don't be in crazy place either. So, the areas I'm Ubering to and from are really good areas. To me, areas is more important than the driver, in my experience with it. But I love when I get women."
Rawaa Knio of Detroit said, although she's never had a bad experience with an Uber driver, "I'd feel more comfortable (with a woman)."
"I would really like to have more women working in the Uber," she added.
Ashley Baseler is from St. Louis agreed. "I think I would take advantage of it if I were alone, or if I was with other women. I wouldn't care so much if I was with my husband, but if I were alone I would, for sure... I think women feel more comfortable why women."
Along with Detroit, Uber said this feature will be available in Los Angeles and San Francisco as a pilot, starting next week.
